Herbert Cy Wong Sr. was born on August 18, 1930 in West Allis, Wisconsin to parents George and Georgiana (Chan) Wong. He was one of six siblings, including sisters Gertrude, Mary, Jean, Rose and Betty.
On February 7, 1959, Herb married Theresa Lee, who preceded him in passing in December 2008. Together they raised four children – Susan, Herbert Jr., Denise and David, who survive him along with six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Military Service and Education
A dedicated veteran, Herb Wong served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, earning a Purple Heart for bravery in combat.
After completing his military service, Herb furthered his education by earning a biology degree from Carroll College (now Carroll University) in Wisconsin. He believed deeply in serving his country as well as pursuing knowledge.
Founding Suzie Wong’s Restaurant
In 1970, Herb and Theresa Wong moved their family from Wisconsin to State College, PA, where they opened the town’s first Chinese restaurant – Suzie Wong’s.
Famous for Herb’s secret recipe egg rolls, Suzie Wong’s on College Avenue became a beloved local fixture for decades. The restaurant moved to North Atherton Street in 1972 before eventually closing, but remained a popular community dining spot.
Herb’s Passions and Hobbies
Beyond the restaurant business, Herb Wong had a lifelong passion for sports and photography. In high school, he excelled as an football offensive lineman and was team captain.
An avid military history buff, Herb collected war memorabilia and equipment. He also frequently photographed his family and community events. But his greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren as they grew up.
